A small sensor that measures changes in speed and direction — how hard a vehicle brakes, accelerates, corners or is struck. It is the component that decides “something just happened” and triggers a recording or an alert. Most harsh-driving and collision detection starts here.
Telematics & trackingTechnology that helps prevent a collision happening at all, such as automatic braking or a blind-spot warning. Contrast with passive safety (seatbelts, airbags, crumple zones), which reduces harm once a collision is already occurring.
Safety & complianceAn umbrella term for systems that watch the road and help the driver: lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection and similar. On commercial vehicles ADAS is usually camera- and radar-based.
Why it matters: ADAS features are increasingly mandated on new vehicles, and insurers increasingly ask whether you have them.
Safety & complianceThe vehicle detects an imminent collision and applies the brakes itself if the driver does not react in time. Widely credited with substantial reductions in rear-end and pedestrian collisions.
Safety & complianceSoftware that recognises patterns without being told exactly what to look for — for example, distinguishing a cyclist from a bin bag, or a phone held to an ear from a hand scratching a head. In practice, “AI” in this market usually means computer vision running on a camera or in the cloud, plus scoring and prioritisation of events.
Video & camerasWhat happens when a system generates so many notifications that people stop reading them. A serious and underestimated failure mode: an unfiltered system that flags every pothole as a “harsh event” quickly becomes an ignored system. Good configuration is as important as good hardware.
Telematics & trackingSoftware that reads vehicle registration plates from video. Used for site access control, yard management and, in some jurisdictions, enforcement. Note the privacy implications — number plates are personal data in many contexts.
Video & camerasA structured way for two software systems to exchange data automatically. If you want your vehicle data to flow into your job-scheduling, payroll, maintenance or business intelligence system without anyone re-keying it, you need an API.
Why it matters: “Does it integrate?” is really the question “is there a documented, supported API, and who pays to build the connection?”
Data, privacy & ITAnything of value you want to keep track of. In this industry it usually means something that is not a driven road vehicle: a trailer, generator, excavator, welfare unit, skip, cage, tool, container, pump or traffic-management barrier.
Assets & equipmentKnowing where your equipment is, whether it is being used, and being alerted if it moves when it should not. Delivered by attaching a small tracking device to the asset which reports its position to a central system.
Assets & equipmentThe proportion of available time an asset is actually working. A generator that runs 12 hours a week is not earning its keep. Utilisation data is often the single largest source of savings in an asset tracking business case, because it tells you what to sell, what to redeploy and — crucially — what not to buy or hire next quarter.
Assets & equipmentAn older term for GPS vehicle tracking. Still used in public sector and emergency services tenders.
Telematics & trackingA tracking device with its own internal battery, used on assets that have no power supply of their own — trailers, plant attachments, containers, cabins. Battery life depends almost entirely on how often the device reports: a unit reporting once a day may last years; one reporting every two minutes may last weeks.
Assets & equipmentA short-range, very low-power wireless technology. Used for small, cheap tags on low-value items (tools, PPE, small equipment). A BLE tag does not know where it is; it is “seen” by a nearby reader — typically a phone, a vehicle-mounted gateway or a site beacon — which reports the sighting. Gives you “last seen here, at this time” rather than live location.
Assets & equipmentAn area around a vehicle the driver cannot see directly or via mirrors. On a large goods vehicle the nearside (kerbside) blind spot is where a disproportionate number of serious cyclist and pedestrian collisions occur.

The gap between reports determines how accurate the line is — 30-second reporting produces a smooth, defensible trail; five-minute reporting produces a trail that cuts corners and can look wrong on a disputed job.
Telematics & trackingA system using sensors or cameras to detect a cyclist or pedestrian in the nearside blind spot and warn the driver. Defined technically under an international regulation and required as part of several vehicle safety schemes.

Safety & complianceThe internal data network of a modern vehicle — the “nervous system” that lets the engine, gearbox, brakes and dashboard talk to one another. A telematics device connected to the CAN bus can read genuine manufacturer data (fuel used, engine hours, fault codes, seatbelt status, PTO engagement) rather than estimating it.
Why it matters: CAN data is far more accurate than GPS-derived estimates, and it is what separates a basic tracker from a genuine fleet management device.
Telematics & trackingA camera and screen combination that replaces or supplements a mirror, giving the driver a clearer view of areas around the vehicle. Increasingly type-approved as a mirror replacement on new commercial vehicles.
Video & camerasThe mobile phone network (4G, 5G, and the low-power variants) used to send data from a vehicle or asset to the cloud. Everything else in this glossary depends on it. Coverage gaps are handled by storing data on the device and uploading later.
Data, privacy & ITThe documented trail proving that a piece of evidence — typically video — has not been altered between the incident and the courtroom. If footage cannot be shown to be authentic and complete, its value in a disputed claim falls sharply.
Insurance & claimsA UK industry standard for managing the road risk created by construction traffic. Frequently written into contracts by clients and principal contractors, meaning suppliers must meet it to win or keep work.
Safety & complianceSoftware that runs on the provider’s servers and is accessed through a web browser or app, rather than installed on your own computers. You pay a subscription; updates, backups and security patching are the provider’s responsibility.
Data, privacy & ITThe structured process of reviewing a driver’s events with them and agreeing what changes. It is the part of a safety programme that actually produces the improvement — the technology only finds the material. A system without a coaching process produces reports; a system with one produces fewer collisions.
Safety & complianceThe preferred term across the road safety profession, and increasingly in official statistics and government communication. “Accident” implies unavoidable misfortune; “collision” reflects the evidence that most crashes have identifiable, preventable causes.
Safety & complianceCamera recording that runs all the time the vehicle is in use, with footage overwritten on a loop once storage is full. Contrast with event-triggered recording, which only saves clips around a detected incident.
Why it matters: Continuous recording gives you the footage you did not know you would need; it also raises legitimate privacy questions that must be addressed in policy.
Video & camerasThe total cost of running a vehicle divided by distance covered. A useful denominator for almost every fleet efficiency argument, because it normalises away differences in fleet size and workload.
Buying & commercialThe periodic training requirement for professional lorry, bus and coach drivers. Relevant here because telematics data is commonly used to target and evidence that training.
Safety & complianceDeliberately staged or induced collisions intended to generate fraudulent insurance claims. Commercial vehicles are targeted because they are insured, usually assumed to be at fault, and their drivers rarely have independent evidence. Forward-facing video is the standard defence.
Insurance & claimsA camera mounted in a vehicle that records the road ahead, and sometimes the cab interior. A connected dashcam also transmits footage and data over the mobile network; an unconnected one simply records to a memory card that someone has to physically retrieve.
Video & camerasUnder UK and EU data protection law, the controller decides why and how personal data is processed (usually the employer); the processor acts on the controller’s instructions (usually the technology provider).
Why it matters: The controller carries the legal accountability. Buying a system does not outsource your obligations.
Data, privacy & ITHow long you keep recorded data before deleting it. Keeping footage “just in case, forever” is both expensive and, where personal data is involved, difficult to justify. A defensible retention policy states a period, a reason and an automatic deletion process.
Data, privacy & ITDistance travelled with no load or no productive purpose. One of the easier inefficiencies to spot with route and job data, and one of the more valuable to eliminate.
Buying & commercialThe device fitted to larger commercial vehicles that records driving time, breaks and rest periods to enforce drivers’ hours rules. Modern versions record position at intervals and can be checked remotely by enforcement authorities as the vehicle passes.
Safety & complianceAn in-cab camera and software that watches the driver for signs of fatigue, distraction, phone use, smoking, or not wearing a seatbelt, and warns them in real time. The most contentious element of any video programme and the one that requires the most careful policy work and communication.
Video & camerasTime a vehicle or asset is unavailable because it is broken, being repaired, or waiting for parts. Usually a much larger cost than the repair itself, because it disrupts jobs, forces hire replacements and burns planning time.
Buying & commercialA structured written assessment of the privacy risks of a processing activity, and how you will reduce them.
Why it matters: For driver behaviour monitoring, in-cab cameras and anything using analytics to make inferences about individuals, a DPIA is a legal requirement in the UK and EU, not a nice-to-have. It is also the single most useful document you can produce for handling driver and union concerns, because it forces you to write down what you will and will not do with the data.
Data, privacy & ITTurning raw events (speeding, harsh braking, cornering, idling, phone use) into a single comparable number or grade per driver. Useful for prioritising who to coach first. Dangerous if used punitively without context — a city multi-drop driver and a trunking driver cannot fairly be compared on the same scale.
Safety & complianceAnything that takes the driver’s eyes off the road, hands off the wheel or mind off the task. Consistently one of the largest contributory factors in commercial vehicle collisions, and the primary target of in-cab monitoring.
Safety & complianceA way of identifying which driver is in which vehicle — usually a fob, card, PIN or app. Without it, in a shared-vehicle operation, all data is attributed to the vehicle and none of it can be fairly used for coaching.
Telematics & trackingThe legal obligation on an employer to take reasonable steps to protect employees and others affected by their work — including people who drive for work and the road users around them.
Why it matters: An employer is expected to be able to demonstrate it managed the risk, not merely assert it. Records, not intentions, are what stand up.
Safety & complianceThe formal record of a driver’s walkaround inspection, noting any defects. Increasingly completed on a phone or tablet, with photographs, and linked automatically to the maintenance system.
Safety & complianceA scheme rating how much a lorry driver can see directly through the cab windows, rather than via mirrors and cameras. Operates as a permit requirement for heavy goods vehicles in certain urban areas, with lower-rated vehicles required to fit a specified package of additional safety equipment to qualify.
Why it matters: It is a hard operational constraint — no permit, no access, and penalty charges for non-compliance.
Safety & complianceA driving style that minimises fuel or energy use: gentle acceleration, anticipation, early gear changes, reduced idling, steady speeds. Telematics makes it measurable, which is what makes it improvable.

Why it matters: It dramatically reduces data costs, speeds up in-cab warnings to real time, and means the vast majority of footage never leaves the vehicle — a genuinely useful point in privacy discussions.

Automated FNOL — where a detected collision triggers an immediate notification with location, time, telematics data and video attached — is consistently one of the highest-value integrations available, because early, evidenced notification reduces claim severity, third-party capture and credit hire exposure.
Insurance & claimsA voluntary UK accreditation scheme covering safety, efficiency and environmental performance for commercial vehicle operators. Widely specified as a contractual requirement by clients, particularly in construction and public sector work.
Safety & complianceMatching fuel card transactions to vehicle position and tank data to spot mismatches — fuel bought when the vehicle was 30 miles away, or more litres purchased than the tank can hold.
Buying & commercialA virtual boundary drawn on a map — around a depot, customer site, restricted area or postcode. The system alerts you when something crosses it. The most useful and most under-used feature in the entire category: it turns raw location data into an actionable event.
Telematics & trackingThe general term for satellite positioning systems, of which GPS is one. Modern devices use several constellations at once for better accuracy and faster fixes, particularly in cities.
Telematics & trackingThe satellite system most people mean when they say “tracking”. A receiver in the vehicle or asset works out its position from satellite signals; the device then transmits that position over the mobile network. GPS itself is free, passive and gives no information back to the satellite — the tracking happens in the transmission.
Telematics & trackingSmall apparent movements reported by a stationary vehicle, caused by signal reflection off buildings or poor sky visibility. Well-configured systems filter it out; poorly configured ones generate phantom journeys.

Telematics & trackingVideo resolution. In practical terms, resolution determines whether you can read a number plate at distance. Higher resolution means larger files, more storage and more data cost, so most systems record at higher resolution locally and stream a lower-resolution version.

Data, privacy & ITThe road safety measure that counts the outcomes that actually matter. Government targets, local authority strategies and corporate safety objectives are increasingly framed in KSI terms rather than total collision counts.

It also consumes a lot of mobile data.

Data, privacy & ITA ruggedised, multi-camera recorder built for vehicles. Where a dashcam typically handles one or two cameras, an MDR handles four, eight or more — front, nearside, offside, rear, interior, tail-lift, load area — and records them all in sync to internal storage.
Why it matters: For large or complex vehicles, single-camera coverage leaves exactly the areas where incidents happen unrecorded.
Video & camerasThe amount of data each device is permitted to use per month. Exceeding it either costs money or throttles the service. A significant hidden cost in video systems and a question worth asking early: what happens on a month when there are three incidents and forty footage requests?
Buying & commercialA system that detects a pedestrian or cyclist directly in front of a vehicle and warns the driver as it pulls away from rest. Addresses a specific and disproportionately fatal collision type.
Safety & complianceSoftware architecture that lets one organisation see its own data while a parent group, hirer or client sees an appropriate subset. Essential for hire companies, contractors managing subcontractor fleets and group structures.
Buying & commercialAn event that could have resulted in a collision but did not.
Why it matters: Near misses are far more numerous than collisions and carry the same lessons at none of the cost. A programme that only reviews collisions is learning from the smallest possible sample. Detecting and reviewing near misses is where proactive risk management actually happens.
Safety & complianceThe nearside is the side of the vehicle nearest the kerb; the offside is the side nearest the centre of the road. In a left-hand-drive vehicle these are reversed. Most vulnerable road user collisions involving large vehicles occur on the nearside.
Safety & complianceThe standardised diagnostic socket found in most modern vehicles. A tracker can be plugged straight in — no installation cost, no downtime, and it can be moved between vehicles. The trade-offs: it is visible and easily unplugged, it may not deliver the full depth of data a hardwired installation provides, and on some vehicles it can interfere with other equipment.
Telematics & trackingTotal distance recorded by the vehicle. Reading it directly from the vehicle rather than estimating it from GPS makes mileage-based servicing and mileage claims accurate.

Assets & equipmentUsing engine data, fault codes and usage patterns to service a vehicle or machine before it fails, rather than at a fixed interval or after a breakdown. Reduces roadside failures and extends component life, at the cost of requiring genuine data discipline to work.
Assets & equipmentA function allowing location detail to be suppressed during permitted private use, while the vehicle remains protected against theft. In practice, the mechanism that makes lawful monitoring of a vehicle used privately possible at all.
Data, privacy & ITThe legal and ethical principle that a monitoring measure must be no more intrusive than is necessary to achieve a legitimate aim. It is the test regulators apply, and it is why “we record everything all the time because we can” is a weak position and “we record what we need, for a stated reason, for a stated period” is a strong one.
Data, privacy & ITA measure of how reliable a reported GPS position is, based on how many satellites the receiver could see. Positions with a poor quality of fix should be treated cautiously in any dispute.
Telematics & trackingIn practice, “within a few seconds to a couple of minutes”, not literally instantaneous. Worth pinning down in a specification, because the difference between a 10-second and a 3-minute update matters enormously for some use cases and not at all for others.
Telematics & trackingGetting stolen equipment back. Tracking substantially improves the odds, particularly in the first hours, and the practical value is greater than the equipment’s replacement cost alone once hire replacement, project delay and insurance consequences are counted.

Assets & equipmentA composite number representing how risky a driver, vehicle, route or depot appears to be. Useful for prioritisation. Requires transparency about how it is calculated, or people will not trust it — and rightly so.
Safety & complianceThe gain from an investment relative to its cost, usually expressed as a percentage or a multiple. Distinct from payback period, which measures time rather than magnitude. Both are usually needed: finance wants the return, operations wants to know when the pain stops.
Buying & commercialSoftware that works out the most efficient sequence and path for a set of jobs. Distinct from navigation, which simply gets one vehicle from A to B. Savings come from doing the same work in fewer miles and fewer hours.
Buying & commercialSoftware provided as a subscription rather than a one-off purchase. Predictable operating cost, no capital outlay, continuous updates — and a recurring charge that never ends, so total cost over the contract term is what matters, not monthly price.
Buying & commercialThe memory card storing video in a camera. Consumer-grade cards fail quickly under the constant rewriting and temperature extremes of a vehicle.
Why it matters: The most common cause of “we had cameras but there was no footage” is a failed card that nobody knew had failed. Industrial-grade cards and automated card-health monitoring are not an upsell; they are the difference between having evidence and not.
Video & camerasAny device that measures a physical condition — temperature, door open/closed, load, tyre pressure, humidity, fuel level, tilt. Sensors turn a location system into an operational one.
Assets & equipmentThe contractual commitment on response times, uptime, support hours and fix times.
Why it matters: On a five-year video telematics contract, the SLA usually determines your actual experience far more than the hardware specification does. Ask what percentage of the fleet is expected to be recording correctly at any given time, and what happens if it is not.
Buying & commercialThe mobile subscription in the device. A roaming or multi-network SIM can switch between networks to maintain coverage, which materially improves reliability in rural areas and for vehicles crossing borders.
Data, privacy & ITTwo different measurements. Against the posted limit means the system knows the actual road speed limit and compares against it — accurate but dependent on map data quality. Against a set limit means a flat threshold across all roads — crude, but never wrong for the wrong reason. Most disputes about speeding reports come from confusing the two.
Telematics & trackingThe insurer’s process of recovering costs from the party actually at fault. Good evidence accelerates it, which is why insurers value telematics and video data even when the policyholder is not at fault.
Insurance & claimsAn alert when a device is unplugged, removed, obscured or its power is cut. Essential on both vehicle and asset devices — a tracker that can be silently disabled provides false assurance, which is worse than no assurance.
Assets & equipmentThe combination of telecommunications and informatics: collecting data from a vehicle or machine and sending it somewhere useful. In everyday use it means location, movement and vehicle data delivered to software you can act on.
